4 dead in road mishap on Expressway, driver booked
Four Mumbai residents were killed on the spot when their speeding car geared out of control on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and after crossing the one-foot divider, collided head on with a trailer that was coming from the opposite end early on Friday.
According to the Lonavala city police, the accident took place at 5.40 am in Valvangoan near Narayani dham in Pune rural. The deceased, Shirish K. Vichare (47) and his three close friends Naresh Katkar (45), Rajesh Ramalu (24) and Amit Sharma (25), had set off from Pune in their Maruti Omni. Vichare had worked for nearly two decades as an electrician at Matoshree for Bal Thackeray.
The three had accompanied Vichare to his relative’s place in Pune and were returning home. Police inspector Vishnu Pawar said, “It was early morning and there is a possibility that the driver, Vichare must have dozed of at the wheel, due to which the car went out of control.”
Another official Vishwas Ambekar said, “The car’s right front wheel had burst. It could be the reason that their car suddenly swerved and went out of control. We are looking for eyewitnesses to ascertain the sequence of events as all the passengers of the car died on the spot.”
All four deceased are electricians and residents of Vakola. Vichare was not driving under the influence of alcohol, but has been posthumously booked under Section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
