325 schools attend science exhibition
Around 325 school students from the city came up with innovative ideas in the “Inspire award exhibition,” a science exhibition held in Holy Name High School, Colaba.
Students made projects on different concepts, varying from how human excreta can keep the soil fertile, safe driving modules, use of magnets in cars to control accidents in India, intelligent streetlight, which automatically switches on after sunlight etc. The exhibits also included eco-friendly houses and electromagnetic cranes.
The exhibition is the outcome of a Central government initiative to encourage innovation and creativity among children, and provide an opportunity to visiting students to learn scientific concepts from their peers.
According to the Central government initiative, an amount of `5,000 is sanctioned per child, per school to participate in the exhibition. It is a state and national-level science exhibition that has been organised annually for the past three years.
Uday Pathade, assistant deputy education inspector, who was in-charge of organising the exhibition on behalf of the government this year, said, “The new ideas help children gain knowledge…It also highlights the role of Science and technology in producing good quality and environmental-friendly materials for the use of
society,” said Mr Pathade.
He further added, “The exhibition is held both at the state and national-level. The winner in the national-level round will get a scholarship of `80,000 per year. The government will also fund the student, if he/she plans to pursue a PhD.”
