MLA alleges he could break into yerawada jail for `5L
Mumbai, July 24: A legislator on Wednesday created a flutter in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after he told home minister R.R. Patil that he could “break into” Pune’s Yerawada Jail for `5 lakh. “I know what goes on in jails. I was in one for four years,” said Dhule MLA Anil Gote, an accused in the multi-crore Telgi stamp scam, who had been lodged in Yerawada Jail in the case.
Mr Gote made the remarks after Madhuri Misal, BJP MLA from Pune, asked Mr Patil about cellphones and other facilities being made available illegally to prisoners in Pune jail. Mr Misal raised the issue during the question-hour. The home minister said the process to install CCTVs and jammers in jails was in progress. Mr Gote intervened saying he knew what goes on behind the prison walls. “Jailors and the police are on payroll of gangs and make queues to get their share. And here you speak about security. Give me `5 lakh, I will break into Yerawada Jail,” Mr Gote said.
He further alleged that the jailor gets `25,000 per month as “hafta”. Mr Patil announced that the CID would probe the same.
