10-year-old boy falls inside well, drowns
A 10-year-old boy died, when he fell inside a 10-foot deep pit at a construction site early on Sunday morning in Goregaon (east).
Ranjit Vilas Gupta had come to the city only three days ago from Uttar Pradesh to meet his brother Rakesh (20), who lives in the Ganesh Nagar slums and owns a small eatery stall near the locality, where the mishap occurred.
On Sunday, Ranjit wanted to attend nature’s call and asked his brother for a suitable site nearby. Rakesh directed him to a construction site where a 10-foot deep well was dug. The 10-year-old reportedly fell inside the well.
Meanwhile, his brother started searching for him frantically. He began asking people around, when someone suggested that he look inside the well. To Rakesh’s horror, Ranjit’s body was found floating inside. Since the well was filled with water, the fire brigade was called for immediately.
Ranjit’s body was fished out later.
The metal sheet covering the well reportedly gave away causing Ranjit to fall inside. The Goregaon police has registered an accidental death report in the incident.
“I thought he must have strayed away, when a few people suggested that I look inside the pit. My younger brother had unfortunately fallen in and must have drowned in the water,” said a grieving Rakesh.
