Youngsters find cool ways to beat the heat

The weatherman recently predicted there’s no relief for the capital, with the temperature likely to hover around 45 degrees. With the increase in scorching heat and no respite, city youngsters are indulging in fun ways to get a little breather from the blazing sun.
Kritika Kushwaha, a student of Venkateswara College, says she tries to spend more time in the Metro just to stay in the AC for a longer time. She adds, “Although I travel by Metro often, sometimes I board a Metro for a longer destination just to stay in the AC. Me and my friends love to hang out in CP, but since it’s too hot, we prefer to simply board the Metro, and get down at Rajiv Chowk, sit in CCD or Nirula’s, and then go home. It saves us from the summer heat, and we get to go out as well.”
And besides hanging out in malls, trying aam panna all day long, and filling their bath tubs with ice cubes, some are only shopping for white outfits for their summer wardrobe. Says Tanu Jain, a media professional, “I’ve been buying only whites, and now my wardrobe in full of all kinds of white linen trousers and cottons tees. I’ve planned to wear only white this summer as it makes me feel cool and gives me a fresh look.”
Shobhit Sujay, who works in BPO and stays in a rented flat in South Delhi, shares that he often sleeps with a wet bed-sheet whenever there is a power cut at night in his area. “Whenever I have a morning shift, nights are painful to spend as power cuts are routine. For a peaceful sleep, I soak my bedsheet in water and sleep with it. It really works as a perfect solution when there is no power and not even a water cooler for instant relief,” he adds.
There are also a few who are taking up summer jobs or doing internships at fast food outlets or joining swimming clubs to stay away from the heat. Reveals Jai Varma, a college student, who is planning to take up a job as a swimming trainer for kids just to be in water and also earn a few quick bucks. “Many of my friends have joined jobs in air-conditioned fast-food outlets, bowling clubs and other indoor jobs. As I was also looking for one, nothing could be better then be a swimming coach as I can have a ball in the water all day long,” he adds.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
