Young messengers of greenery
Habits cultivated at a young age go a long way. To create a greener tomorrow, Green-I is doing just that. Green-I, in association with Carrier, since the last five years has been holding a contest that aims to create awareness and encourage students to think about environmental sustainability.
“We reach out to students and encourage them to take up conservation and sustainability of environment. We encourage students to inculcate an aptitude towards conservation and sustainability of environment. We want to build a strong legacy of sustainability,” says Gaurang Pandya, MD, Carrier India.
A lot of students also think that such initiatives give them a chance to care for the environment and at the same time helps in building aptitude. Of the many schools that participated, five schools — Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi; Vasant Valley School, New Delhi; Sri Aurobindo International School, Hyderabad; Sai International School, Bhubaneshwar and Choithram School, Indore — were selected as the finalists.
Monil Singhal, a Class 12 student from Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, who won the competition, says that her group tried to come up with an idea that would be feasible with minimum resources. “Our topic was to plan a project that would make our institution an example of sustainability over 20 years. We looked at everything and thought that the focus should be on education. Imparting proper knowledge about sustainable development since a young age would really help,” says Monil.
Monil along with with other member and the school’s environment group, Prakriti, is in the process of developing a curriculum. “We would like to develop a curriculum that includes not just classroom teaching but also practical experiences with workshops and field activities,” says Prakriti.
