Word game addiction
It’s been forever since I played Lexicon. United Toys have turned out an impressively well finished version of this classic playing card word game for just `75. Opening the sealed new pack brought back a flood of memories of hours of back-to-back Lexicon sessions with the girl I would later marry!
I’m struck with the simplicity of the rules involved. No clever duplicity. No poker-faced bluffs. Lexicon is an honest-to-goodness classic. Deal out ten cards each. Form complete words in your turn, placed face-up on the table. Or add or insert cards from your hand to words already on the table. With strategic intent, use a turn to discard-and-pick a letter card. To win you need to be the first to get rid of all your cards.
Twenty-five years rolled back in a flash as the first word set was on the table. She converted my ‘swine’ to ‘swaine’. I hit back, converting her ‘smooch’ to ‘slouch’. She used up her 10 cards. It was like old times all over again. Several rounds later, I was always left with cards and points in my hand. As I edged closer to a 100 points, I’d lose the game. Much as I always had!
