Women drivers navigate, read maps better: Study
Contrary to the popular belief that women lack men’s driving skills and are poor in reading maps, a new study reveals that women are a street ahead than men when it comes to giving strangers direction in a more accurate way.
Someone who truly agrees with the findings, model Amanpreet Wahi, says that women are more precise in giving directions than men, who mostly miss out on vital information. “I can say this as many a times my husband, Rahul has given a detailed direction, leading us to a wrong place. Whereas, when we’re together, I’m the one who makes a note of the street name, take care of the directions and guide strangers. I give information people need clearly and in a calm tone, plus I let them know a landmark or two that will tell them if they’ve gone wrong.”
Although Pia Trivedi says that men are better drivers, she also believes that women have better road sense and are better maps readers. “Women are slow, but conscious and practical drivers, who believe in being safe than sorry, unlike men, who are fast and rash drivers. I have learnt to find out ways myself whenever I’m lost and with time I’ve developed an amazing road sense. Women are best when self-guided and men are usually good when they bank on somebody when it comes to direction.”
Although men agree with the research, they defend their ‘driving skills” with wacky excuses. Designer designer Narendra Kumar jokingly says, “This study brings good news, now women will find it easier to find jobs as they can now be hired as drivers.”
VJ Rannvijay says that women are better because men cannot multi-task, that is do two things simultaneously. “Most men are lousy direction-givers because they’re not really looking at the world around them, they’re totally self-absorbed, talking and thinking about their latest gadget, new snazzy computer, rooting for a football team, thinking about a night out with friends and guzzling their favourite beer, the list is endless, so when men are driving, women are left to do the navigating, and women can do both jobs responsibly. ”
Nitin Malik from the band Parikrama sums up saying, “Women are better in giving directions, as mostly they are on the passenger’s seat and can focus better on tracking the route. However, at the end of the day, if we judge both men and women in driving and reading maps, I guess both have their own shortcomings.”
