A window to traditional Indian crafts
Delhi-based NGO Sankalp Samaj Utthan Samiti is holding an exhibition to aid craftspersons and artisans across the country.
The exhibition will include Chanderi saris and Maheshwari saris from Madhya Pradesh, Tussar silk saris and fabrics from Maharashtra and Jharkhand, blue pottery lamps from Rajasthan, Khurja pottery from Uttar Pradesh, Patachitra painting from Orissa, Kawad painting from Rajasthan, Tanjore painting from Tamil Nadu, Sambalpuri and Cuttaki saris from Orissa, Kashmiri embroidery shawls from Kashmir, Gadwal saris from Andhra Pradesh and terracotta jewellery among other items.
Santosh Meena, secretary of Sankalp Samaj Utthan Samiti, believes that it is important to encourage local artisans as it helps them support themselves financially. She says, “All proceeds from the sales go directly to the craftspersons. When a product is purchased from the exhibition, not only do you get a unique handcrafted product, but you also actively participate in preserving Indian arts and crafts and in sustaining the livelihoods of the craftsmen.” The NGO that works towards preserving traditional Indian art and craft is taking the craft works to different states.
