Will Google+ be the death of Facebook?
It’s has been around three weeks since another social network Google+’s arrival in our lives (it is still in its field trial) and it has gathered more than 10 million users already. While the users have mixed feelings about Google’s latest social effort, after the death of Orkut, they are still not sure if it is going to be “the Facebook Killer”. But the more pertinent question here is, do we have enough room in our lives to accommodate another social networking site, after all how many different places do we actually need to share our witty thoughts, display photographs and post our whereabouts?
However, industry analysts feel strongly about Google+ and say that it could become a major player in the social networking world.
“Google+ is still in field trial with limited access. For me, on a fine rainy sunday with a cup of coffee I might actually care to visit Google+ but other than that, I think there are enough networking sites already and Facebook is the new home for people. I feel it will take another 10 years to kill it, which might not be possible considering the rapid growth and changes Facebook goes through every few weeks. We have a super comfort zone on Facebook and to make people like Google+ will take sometime,” says Santu Misra, a freelance writer adding that Google+ is rough and while it might have some new fancy features but Facebook is still a tough opponent.
Seconds Pawan Malhotra, a History major and says, “I am a Facebook addict but I don’t have time for another one. Morover, it gives me ample space to exercise my leisure time vis-a-vis share thoughts, moments with the world. But I am not saying that it won’t get popular, it surely will but Facebook as a platform will then resurge itself. If one remembers Orkut died a very slow death with the entrance of Facebook.”
Whereas for photographer Sanjay Austa, more is good. He says that he gets good help from the social media. “Many of my potential clients are using social networking sites. I have registered myself with Google+. I am not sure how much time I would be able to devote to it, but I see it as another platform and a powerful tool to showcase my work,” concludes Austa.
