Why are Korean buildings disappearing?
The South Korean government has recently granted permission for the construction of a building, called the Infinity Tower, a proposed skyscraper that can disappear at the push of a button. The 1500-foot entertainment complex, which will come up in Cheongna, will use a sophisticated system of cameras and LED to make the building disappear.
According to Wired, the technological premise behind the building is the same one given for prototype invisibility cloaks — cameras on one side of the building will project an image to screens on the other.
The makers of the building, GDS Architects, think they’ve worked out how to create this most dramatic effect possible for pedestrians without overshooting the limits of architectural reality.
GDS president Charles Wee said in a statement, “Instead of symbolising prominence as another of the world’s tallest and best towers, our solution aims to provide the world’s first invisible tower.” The building will also have the world’s third highest observation deck.
