Who turned down an Olympic offer?
Cher, singer-actress, turned down the offer to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi because of the country's anti-gay legislation. “I can’t name names, but my friend who is a big oligarch there, asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show,” Cher told Maclean’s writer Elio Iannacci. “I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there,” The Huffington Post reported.
In Russia it is even illegal to even confirm the existence of homosexuality to children. The Government too turns a blind eye according to Cher. The singer who is gearing up for her release of Closer to the Truth also sounded off on Lady Gaga and Madonna who seem to have courted controversy in recent months when they spoke out against Russia’s stance on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
According to the Canadian Magazine, Cher explained how she can strongly relate to people on the fringes of society of various situations that she had to face early in her career.
Cher has a completely empathising tone towards such crisis situations. She also adds how people hated her boyfriend Sonny and her because we looked and acted differently from others in the society. “Sonny was always getting into fights — people would called him ‘fag’ and he’d get his nose broken — only because we were dressing different,” quoted the Canadian Magazine.
