‘Who doesn’t want to be loved?’

She has been the undisputed queen of television and now, has taken over Bollywood with equal élan. The woman, only in her mid 30s, has been working non-stop for the past 20 years now.

“I was a teenager when I started making television shows,” recalls Ekta Kapoor. Since then, there has been no looking back for this young achiever. Her passion for expanding her company — Balaji Telefilms hasn’t faded a bit. A complete workaholic by nature, those who know her closely will tell you that she has to be begged by her parents and friends to take a break. “That’s because I’m incorrigible,” she laughs.
“I won’t deny the fact that I am a workaholic. For me, work is my top priority. But it’s something I have inherited from my father. If it weren’t for my parents, especially my father, I wouldn’t have done anything in life. He was the one who insisted that I work and become independent in life. And I took his advice very seriously, of course.”
But that’s not the only thing her parents have been insistent about. The two, like most Indian parents, have been asking both the siblings — Ekta and Tusshar to settle down and have a family. While Ekta has been pushing avoiding the conversation, Tusshar has agreed that he wants to settle down. “Both Tusshar and I have done well in life so far and now they want us to tie the knot. I’ll be very happy the day Tusshar gets married. I’ll be a doting aunt to his children,” she says with a gleam in her eyes. But what about her own marriage? “From time to time, I hear rumours about my marriage in the media. I hope it comes true some time or the other,” she laughs.
Marriages are destined to happen at their set time. But doesn’t she miss companionship? “Like any other girl, I want my life to progress the normal way. Who doesn’t want to love or be loved? I’m sure it’ll happen when it has to happen.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
