White magic
Let’s paint the summer story in white! An inclusion in the international fashion map has turned the colour into haute property. And following the rule book, your wardrobe certainly needs a vital presence of white. “A whitewash at this time of the season is highly recommended, however the fun lies in playing it differently,” believes designer Bhakti Shah.
In the global fashion scenario Victoria Beckham is keeping it simple in all white separates, while Valentino and Stella McCartney are giving it ultra feminine wings with broderie anglaise and filigree fabrics.
White has gradually sneaked in and is scoring high in an exclusive black fiefdom — the red carpet. The noteworthy moment was the Golden Globe awards in January, where white sealed the red carpet deal with Jennifer Lopez in a silk lace Zuhair Murad embroidered gown and Anne Hathway in a snow white Chanel couture gown making stunning style statements. House of Prada, Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Jil Sander, Jill Stuart are all making a white noise.
“An all-white affair is soothing to the eyes, however monochromes in the form of coral red, lime yellow and fruity orange when introduced add an element of freshness. A long flowy dress or a short dress in linen can be accommodated here. Sheer layers is another fine example of playing your cards right. Keep the accessories minimal, perhaps a bracelet fits the bill,” adds Shah.
Designers Falguni and Shane Peacock quite like the all-white look. A few style tips from the designer duo could well set the right track for you. “One can go all white and pair it with a statement accessory like a chunky necklace, neon shoes or bags. It will bring the right zing to your style quotient,” is their suggestion.
Falguni adds, “Our most preferred western look for summer is white shorts with lace scallops and a white crop top with gold accessories. Very boho chic, I must say.”
Playing it differently is their mantra too. “Lace, cutwork and sheer fabrics are very much in vogue this summer. Combining the fabric with right cut depending on one’s body type is very important. Someone with a lean figure can opt for an ivory lace body con dress or dresses with sheath silhouettes. Those on the heavier side can go for flowy or wider silhouettes which are also very in at the moment,” suggests Falguni.
Designer Abhishek Dutta sees white as an “investment piece that never runs out of fashion.” He says, “Think white and I visualise a complete white suit with a teaser of black bow tie, very Yves Saint Laurent and very classy. Remember white is strong enough to make a style statement on its own. Keep it white and let the fabric vary. Satins and Chantilly lace club well together. A white lace summer dress always grabs eyeballs in hot times. Give a girl a little white dress and wrap her waist with a black belt and she is going to look like the perfect summer song. Slip into a linen white palazzo with a well shaped top flaunting multi-coloured thread work on the neck line. It can make your day turn wonderfully fashionable.”
