When did a sunset stop traffic in NY?
On Wednesday, when New Yorkers were treated to a gorgeous episode of Manhattanhenge.
It refers to an urban astronomical phenomenon where a sunset is seen perfectly framed by skyscrapers — such was the beauty of the sight that it caused traffic jams across the city when people got out of their cars to capture the scene on cameras or phones.
The same planetary tilt that determines the seasons also shows exactly where the sun will go down each evening.
And due to the way that Manhattan’s unique street grid is designed, the beautiful sunsets are potentially witnessed from some of the borough’s most prominent east-west streets this month and the next, reported NBC News.
Photo-sharing sites such as Flickr, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook were swamped with photos of the phenomenon, as thousands of residents uploaded their snaps from the mélange of the sunset-observing crowds.
However, jaywalkers and reckless traffic issues on the streets led to some concerns among the NY police.
