When ‘love’ turns toxic
There’s no stopping girls from falling for bad guys. Despite Rahul Mahajan’s track record of alleged physical abuse of his first wife and numerous flings, Dimpy tied the knot with him. Of course, fame was the bait and the bonus. But are the perks that come with “bad guys” the most staple being money, status, and the good life, is that good enough to risk one’s life with him? Also, there’s an intrinsic attraction that women have towards such guys, and the belief that they’ll make him come good eventually. As displayed again by the latest turn of events in the highly played out reality TV wedding and subsequent reports of physical abuse.
From Dimpy going public with her story, to asking the media to “respect her privacy” and then making public appearances at the Siddhivinayak temple with hubby Rahul, claiming his undying love, looks like she is willing to give her marriage another shot.
Dr Vinita Malhotra, a Gurgaon-based psychiatrist calls it the battered woman syndrome, where the woman finds solace with a more dominating man. “There are studies which prove that some women knowingly enter relationships where they are generally looked down upon as the lesser partner and even put up with abuse to be with the man,” she says.
Amidst all the controversy, Rahul’s ex-girlfriend Payal Rohtagi has come out with claims that further bolster his image as a woman-beater. “He had hit me when we were together,” she reportedly said. Ranjana Kumari, director, Centre of Social Research, says that anyone can make wrong choices, but one should have the courage to get out of the relationship when it gets out of hand. “While this girl made an irresponsible choice in playing out such important decisions of her life on TV, she should now understand the consequences of being with such a man,” she tells us.
A malady which most fail to understand, is how a gorgeous woman would willingly be with a man who wouldn’t think twice before verbally and physically abusing her.
Raja Chowdhary, another reality TV star who come under fire for allegedly beating up his ex-wife Shweta Tiwari, says that a lot of women say they feel connected to him. “I often ask girls who want to be friends with me, what makes them want to do so. And they reply saying that I might be able to understand their pain after having gone through it myself,” he says.
Another contestant of the same show through which the couple got married, Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega, the very vocal Priyadarshini Singh, says that their (Rahul and Dimpy) chemistry on the sets was visible. “They were quite alike and Dimpy was attracted to him, though no one can say whether it was love or not but she did fall for him,” she says.
What can we say, but “Oh Jejus”!
