Wendell designs a new script on self

At 45 years, a memoir seems too early. Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks felt the same too, but still went ahead and wrote one. The Green Room, an autobiography of Wendell Rodricks, that was launched at Reliance Timeout, Gurgaon recently, gives readers a sneak peek into the Indian fashion industry and his journey from being a boy of a middle class Goan Catholic family to becoming a renowned fashion designer.

Wendell says that the autobiography wasn’t planned. After writing the book, Moda Goa, on Goan clothing, Wendell joined the Goa Writers Group, where the group members discussed each other’s works. During one meeting, one of the ladies in the group suggested that instead of just discussing they should write a book. “Since I couldn’t find a topic to write on, I started writing about myself. I wrote for four months and The Green Room was ready,” he shares.
After the completion of the book many more things have happened that Wendell would like to write on. So, maybe a second book is in the offing? “For that we will have to wait and see,” he quips.
Wendell thinks that it’s sad that despite being a big industry, not many people from the Indian fashion world have written about it. “I know everybody has a story to tell and they should take on the challenge, as it would leave a legacy behind. I’m happy to know Suneet Verma is planning a book. Ritu Kumar too wants to write a book,” he says.
In his book, Wendell was very sure from the beginning that he wanted to write positive things. “I did not want to bash up my own industry. I was aware that I had to maintain a fine balance. I wasn’t supposed to talk too much about myself, or even about somebody else so much that it could harm the person,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
