Wall is all for young artists
Graffiti on public property is disfiguring, insensitive, and anonymous, to boot, but it was a form of self-expression for a group of mainly architecture students to promote the art form. At an event organised by myBigLeap, the Chennai-based educational firm, which made available one of the walls on its premises for the event.
Rizwan Khan, one of the founders, says that MyBigLeap’s agenda was focused on building world class architects, and the graffiti event in the office formed a part of this. “A business can go to great heights only with a sense of design and technology,” he points out. “We intended this to be a way to build people’s awareness and also, a great moment for those involved in our firm,”he adds. With ‘Be Awesome’ as the theme, the objective was to bring together people from different cultural backgrounds and feature their creativity on the walls of the office. “It started with an idea to give the place some life and ended up being an entire day spent drawing, sketching and painting on the wall,” says Rizwan.
The event was led by the main graffiti artist, Sheik. It was not a programme meant only for architects, but also engineers, business students and people from different walks of life whose passion for art drew them out to spend an entire day at the event. “The art on the wall is in the form of three-dimensional graffiti and has sharp, traditional patterns; it’s contemporary, trendy,” says Sheik.
The organisers shot a video of the event. “It became more fun when we decided to record it at one place, focusing on the graffiti on the wall. We are planning to post this video on Youtube. Around 20 people have worked on it,” concludes Rizwan.
