‘Viewers game for sex humour’

“I am not trying to be like anyone,” clarifies actor Tusshar Kapoor when asked if he was trying to copy John Abraham’s famous pose from Dostana. He clears the air and says, “That particular photo was released by the public relations agency not us. But the point is, it got people talking and was trending on Twitter. We wanted to create a hype and we got the reaction we were aiming for.”

Tusshar made his debut in 2001 with Mujhe Kuuch Kehna Hai as a romantic hero and 11 years later found his niche as a comic actor. Comedy comes naturally to him and he’s quite excited to see the audience’s reaction to his latest film, which has generated quite a buzz in the past few weeks.
When asked if he agrees that the Indian audience is ready for sex comedies, Tusshar replies, “The audience today is more than ready. Our first film Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005) was way ahead of its time. Earlier, people thought that families stay away from such films, it’s not so. Families don’t mind watching such films. Delhi Belly with its toilet humour was accepted so why wouldn’t ours? People have been asking me about the sequel to Kya Kool…, but since we were looking for the right script, we were in no hurry. Plus, it isn’t easy to make a film like this.”
He adds, “We’ve worked really hard on this film, and my so-called John-scene in the movie is justified. It’s a reference point in the film, and I have also spoofed my own character from the movie Golmaal.
His onscreen chemistry with co-star Ritesh Deshmukh is much more scintillating than that with his female co-star. Tusshar shares, “Ritesh and I have the best professional relationship. There’s absolutely no negativity and it’s a pleasure to work with him. I am so glad we didn’t do any stupid films in between. We aim to give the best shots and continuously give inputs to improve the scene.”
Contrary to reports that Tusshar is miffed with director Sajid Khan’s attempt to remake Jitender’s 1983 superhit, Himmatwala, he says, “I am really happy and I know that Sajid will do a fabulous job. Ajay (Devgn) is the perfect choice for the role. It’s a powerful, action-oriented film and Sajid is a big Himmatwala fan. I am dying to watch it.”
Unlike other stars, Tusshar has managed to keep his private life away from the media. Making impossible possible, Tusshar says, “There hasn’t been a relationship to hide. But I do like to keep my life private. I am not in a relationship currently, but I am enjoying this phase immensely.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
