For Vidya, all that glitters is gold
That Vidya Balan loves her six-yard drapes is well known. The actress makes it a point to support not just her favourite designer (Sabyasachi Mukherjee) but also several regional labels and traditional pieces. For a recent jewellery store opening, a special Kanjeevaram sari, with a lion motif set in 20 inches of a gold border, was created for Vidya by fashion designer Gaurang Shah.
Gaurang is well known for his intricate jamdani hand-woven creations, and counts Kirron Kher, Sonali Bendre, Sonam Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh among his celebrity fans. He was amazed at Vidya’s “understanding of saris”. “When I met her for the first time, I was awed by her simplicity,” he added. “She loves to wear Kanjeevarams and carries them with such ease. She’s talented, smart and down-to-earth and excels in making style statements through her choice of saris.”
Gaurang is currently touring five cities with his latest bridalwear collection, “Panchali”. He’s been making waves on national level with his attempt to make the otherwise stiff Kanjeevaram more wearable by weaving it differently.
