Tuitions gain steam

Talk about expenditure and there will be a big list of things that one can’t simply overlook or compromise on at any cost. School education for that matter is a must for all, but in today’s day and age it is not enough because in order to get good marks many students depend on private tuitions and coaching classes. As Board exams and various college entrances are round the corner, many students flock to tutorial classes and do not mind paying for much costlier lessons after school hours.

Parth Aggarwal, a class 12 student of Modern School, Vasant Vihar reveals, “I am a student of the science stream and study physics, chemistry and mathematics as main subjects. My quarterly school fees is `28,000 and since it’s the board year I am taking extra tuitions for three subjects. I go for coaching classes and pay around `60,000 for studying PCM. Though the tuitions are just to prepare for my Board exams, I don’t mind paying extra because to get into a good college one has to get good marks.”
Riya Mehta, a class 10 student of DAV School, Rohini adds that it is important to take tuitions and she doesn’t mind paying extra money for it. She opines, “There are hardly any students in my school who do not go for coaching classes. My school fees is `1,500 per month and I spend the same amount for studying maths and science in two different tuitions. If you have to get a good percentage and get your favourite subjects in higher classes you have to go for tuitions.”
Seconds Sanya Batra, a commerce student at Birla Vidya Niketan School, who doesn’t mind spending `28,000 for studying accounts and economics in a private tutorial centre in the city. She says, “In schools, most of the time teachers just concentrate on finishing the syllabus and there is hardly any time for revision. On the other hand, tuitions are expensive, but are important because they don’t rush and teach the topics with more clarity.”
However, Nupur Mehrotra, a mother and a teacher opines that though sending young children for tuitions is not required, it is a common practice now. She says, “Due to the lack of time and careless attitude many well educated parents also send their kids for tuitions from a very young age. Later it becomes a habit and children feel less confident studying by themselves. They stop taking school classes seriously and rely more on private tuitions. And thus, they don’t mind spending on much costlier tuition fees.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
