Treasures from the past
Keeping alive the old world charm, socialite Tanisha Mohan’s home in posh New Friend’s Colony houses fond memories of her old haveli in Chandni Chowk. The entrance opens up to a huge living room done up in golden hues.
From 80-year-old chandeliers from Morano, Italy to 24 carat gold wallpaper, Roman paintings and silver-framed mirrors, the antiques from Chandni Chowk spell royalty. “We used to live in a haveli called the Chunnamal haveli in Chandni Chowk. These pieces were brought and preserved by my father-in-law, so they are blessings for us. My husband grew up in that haveli. These treasures from the past help us keep those memories alive.”
The drawing room opens to a small bar room that leads to a dining room done up in a contemporary style. The main attraction of the dining room is the unique 40-year-old war scene wallpaper and golden crockery set.
“These were bought by my father-in-law from United States. The Chinese crockery in gold is from Czechoslovakia, Poland which he collected over the years. My furniture is all Greek, which I got reupholstered to team up with my antique collection,” she adds.
The dining area opens up to water fountain. “While decorating my house, I made sure that it’s based on three C’s — classic, cool and comfortable. This style theme which will never be dated,” says Tanisha.
The house also reveals Tanisha’s love for art. While her love for Zen is reflected in the various Buddha paintings and statues, her balcony has her favourite classical Tanjore painting of Goddess Sita and Lord Krishna. “I feel a positive connection with the Buddha. His paintings bring a calming effect. I like happy paintings,” she says.
The first floor leads to small gallery that opens up to Tanisha’s bedroom, lounge and the kids’ room. The staircase wall is adorned with pictures of family and friends.
“My favourite place in my house is the sitting area next to my bedroom. I spend time with my kids there. It’s like a family lounge for us. We’re planning to do up the room with trilogy paintings of our kids that will be done by an artist friend,” she says.
The kids’ room is done up in shades of pink for the girls and blue for their brother. “The idea was to ensure their rooms get a fair amount of natural light and oxygen. The money plants and palm trees in the balcony create a natural ambience,” she adds.
