Time for haute and happening shows
A long pending initiative this one was. But after the launch of a new show on fashion, I Love Style, designers open up about how it’s important to have a show that talks about fashion more seriously than the ones running.
Shantanu Mehra, of designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil, rues that television doesn’t have shows dedicated to fashion and hopes I Love Style will help in filling the gap.
Designer Gaurav Gupta says there’s a serious dearth of shows on fashion on the small screen. “There are no shows on fashion really. At one point of time Bandana Tiwari used to do a show, which made sense and was informative. But today, there are hardly any shows which focus on fashion. Even if there are, they’re too Bollywood-centric. We need shows that are more informative and are innovative. With so many youngsters taking up fashion, and young bloggers thriving on the Web, we need shows that talk about young fashion,” he says.
And it’s not just the number of shows that matter but the content that needs serious attention. For instance, designer Ranna Gill feels I Love Style is reaching out to people in the right way. “The show is reaching out to people and talking about contemporary Indian wear. There should be shows like these. They are making apparel more tangible to customers. There are a variety of subjects that can be handled on television. A show should be able to tell viewers what a designer is making and what’s available,” says Gill.
According to some, more frequent reruns of fashion shows would keep young fashionistas updated. Designer Nida Mahmood says, “Perhaps repeats of the prominent fashion weeks should be shown more often than they are at the moment. This will help the masses get more accustomed to the idea of fashion. Exposure is the most effective way to educate the person on the subject, hence if people are exposed to more of fashion and there are shows in which information is given about concepts behind the collections, fabrics used, current trends etc, the layman will know more and will have a better understanding of fashion.”
