Time to go bananas to stay fit

Did you know that unlike other fruits, the banana does not come from a tree but from the world’s largest herb? Yes, this is true! The banana plant is not a tree. Bananas actually evolved as a result of a genetic mutation. Today, they are one of the most widespread fruits in
the world.
Native of the Indo-Malaysian region, this golden fruit is available worldwide and all year round. Not only the fruit, but the plant is also considered extremely auspicious in all our religious ceremonies. And even better, it is packed with nutrients.
One of the best sources of potassium, a medium sized banana contains approximately 467 mg of this essential mineral. Potassium is needed to maintain normal blood pressure levels and heart functions.
Owing to its potassium content, bananas are also extremely beneficial for the kidneys and bones. A normal intake of potassium suppresses calcium excretion in the urine and minimises the risk of kidney stones. Also, for the same reason it minimises the loss of calcium from the body and thereby reduces any risk of osteoporosis — a metabolic bone disorder.
Bananas, as we all know are excellent for an upset stomach. With a fibre content of 3.1 gms, they are very good in relieving constipation and ensuring smooth bowel movements.
This tropical fruit is also very good for your blood. It is rich in naturally available vitamin B6 which helps the body make haemoglobin.
Bananas are good for babies too. Very often they are the first solid food given to children since the fruit is extremely easy to digest.
It has also been found that bananas are good for people suffering from anaemia, arthritis, tuberculosis, dysentery, diarrhoea and urinary disorders. The fruit is also a great source of instant energy; contains no fat, neg-
ligible amounts of sodium and no
cholesterol!
So, go ahead and eat this wonderful fruit. And what better way to eat a fruit than just to peel it? That’s what most of us love about bananas!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
