Time to DIY ladies

Why ask a man for help when you can do it yourself? That’s what being an independent woman is all about, say these guys. From paying the bills to getting around, here are the top five things women should do for themselves.

Pay the bills
Model Karan Ambardar points out, “You hear women talking about gender equality but they still expect men to take care of the bills. Whether it’s a guy friend or a partner, he’s expected to pick up the tab for a woman.” Paying your share is the first step to equality, he states.

Get tech-savvy
While guys don’t mind doing the occasional heavy lifting, Karan adds, “Some women suffer from sheer ignorance when it comes to gadgets. I’m not talking about operating high-end gizmos, but even doing basic stuff on their laptops. In this day and age, that’s a shame.”

Change a tire
Another department where the ladies are lacking, according to actor Chetan Hansraj, is automobiles. “Women don’t understand vehicles. Every time something goes wrong, they just call for help,” he says adding, “I see an attitude problem in women who think if they have a boyfriend or husband, their life is set. It becomes the man’s job to do stuff like maintain the vehicle. Personally I think women should not only learn to drive, they should know how to deal with automobile emergencies. That would impress the guys and also boost their own confidence.”

Shop alone
“One thing I don’t understand about women is why they make their boyfriends tag along on shopping trips,” says IT professional Prashanth Nambiar. “It’s not like they heed anyone else’s opinion anyway. So it’s a total waste of time for guys. The only possible reason is that they want a guy to pay the bills and carry the bags!”

Commute/Travel
Student Rahul Kanth adds, “Something that I’ve noticed in everyday life is that many girls can’t get from point A to B on their own. They always need someone to pick them up and drop them.” According to the youngster, this is a serious handicap. “Women should learn to step out on their own once in a while. Maybe a solo holiday is not everyone’s cup of tea, but they should at least be able to get around town without a man.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
