Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts recently organised an exclusive exhibition on Indian Embroideries titled ‘Resurgence’. The exhibition which highlights the revival of Indian weaves and embroideries will be on till September 15 at the IGNCA. This two-week exhibition is curated by renowned artisan Asif Shaikh, who earlier revived some of the rarest and almost extinct embroideries of our country.
Minister of culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch inaugurated the exhibition and felicitated artisans for their exquisite work in embroidery. The exhibition opening was followed by a symposium on ‘Textile and Embroidery Traditions Across India’.
During the inauguration, Chandresh Kumari Katoch mentioned that India has huge untapped potential of craftsmen and artisans. She said, “Such platforms pave way for the restoration of the indigenous handicraft and enhance inter-state cultural discourse. It’s overwhelming to see Indian handicrafts getting huge recognition from across the globe.”
Asif Shaikh, the curator of the exhibition, informed, “It is an exhibition showcasing revival of India’s weaves and embroideries. The exhibition highlights textile techniques including Bandhni, Ajrakh, Kalamkari, Mata ni Pachedi, different kinds of block-prints and many weaving styles such as double Ikat, Jamdani etc.”
