Sweet Sixties
It all happened when Givenchy redefined sensuality through an LBD that became synonymous with Audrey Hepburn and her Breakfast at Tiffany. Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking collection introduced women to the wonders of androgynous fashion, and Mary Quant created the mini skirt.
Jackie Kennedy’s immaculate style caught an entire generation’s attention. Long gone, but hardly forgotten, those were the best years of fashion. The happening Sixties!
If you missed all the 1960s fashion fun, rejoice now as the current mood is retrospective. Designers are revisiting the much cherished era and recreating its magic in the summer of 2013.
Designer Wendell Rodricks decodes the super Sixties and says, “The ’60s style was not only about clothes, it was a liberating mindset, music and lifestyle. There is no denying that the fashion world is in the grip of the Sixties fever. Louis Vuitton, Prada, Stella, Von Furstenberg have all visited the ’60s this year. Not just the clothes but also the flat sandals, sunglasses and evening shoes.” His own vision of the ’60s look comes as “an easy summer kaftan or airy floor-length floral summer dress. Beyond that, the hair had a very relaxed hairstyle in the ’60s.”
Reading the pulse of the most talked about decade and reading it quite right, designer Anita Dongre points out, “Youth today adore the ’60s fashion and style as it is refreshing and contemporary. The trademark and psychedelic prints, bright pop colours and vintage appeal make it more popular.”
The designer recommends, “This year is about short hems, A-line silhouettes, shift dresses in black and white, stripes, checks, geometric prints and neon colours. Although the cuts are simple and strong structured, the fun and opulent details make the outfits chic and stylish. Accessories and right styling play an important role in completing your look. You can opt for small box bags, colourful bangles, funky and vintage sunglasses like cat-eye and round shades.”
For designer Mandira Wirk, vintage fashion is evergreen and stylish, hence never out of sync. “From pencil skirts to cocktail flock dresses, red lips and spider lashes are just timelessly beautiful. My ‘It’ Sixties look would be the iconic Audrey Hepburn look — large sunglasses, pearl string, of course her LBD and the unmistakable red lips. It all spells elegance,” she says.
“The first signs of the Sixties revival was unleashed by Marc Jacob’s collection for Louis Vuitton and since then, there is no stopping the retro fever. Checkerboard and stripes prints, monochromes dominate the scene. Remember it’s not just the clothes, the entire look has to be reflective,” says designer Abhishek Dutta.
