Strong roles fascinate Kirti

From a homely girl in Khichdi... to a bold role in Shaitan, Kirti Kulhari is going places

After playing a fairly gharelu Punjabi kudi in Khichdi: The Movie, Kirti Kulhari took up a bold role in Bejoy Nambiar’s Shaitan.

She’s back, not exactly with a bang, but a kitty full of goodies. Kirti is on an all-time high these days with three interesting movies lined up slated for release soon.
In a candid conversation, she tells us, “I’m doing three movies right now and all of them have interesting roles.” To begin with, she’ll soon be seen in Luke Kenny’s forthcoming Zombie. “The role is nothing that’s out of the box, but I loved the script. It’s a simple character where I’m playing Luke’s love interest and we are separated because he is always busy with his work,” she tells us.
With a simple role like that, we wonder what compelled her to take this one up? “I knew that I don’t have a major role to play in the movie, but took it up as I wanted to be a part of the script, with it being the first serious zombie film in India. In fact, I told Luke that I’m not going to play a zombie, but can do any other role,” she adds.
She doesn’t think playing the role of a zombie is very acting-oriented. “It’s not challenging enough,” she says. For someone who wants to do strong roles, Kirti asserts that she was quite convinced with her role in Jal with Purab Kohli. “Jal is a story based in Kutch. We shot in extreme weather and I play a simple Kutch girl. Getting into that attire, shooting in Bhuj in the hot weather and finally learning the Kutch accent was a challenge,” she says. In Jal, she plays the role of a Kutchi girl, with a tanned look, unlike her look in Shaitan. Yet another film in her kitty is the Super se Upar with Vir Das and Deepak Dobriyal where she’s playing a simple girl from Rajasthan.
“In this film, I play a small town girl who’s very happy with her life and not very ambitious. She loves dancing and then she realises that she can pursue it further and goes to Mumbai. The story takes off from there,” she says. Considering she is a Rajasthani, she was very happy playing this role. After this is Single Chal Riyaa Hun where she will be seen playing a rich spoilt South Mumbai girl.
Talking about the kind of roles she wants to do, she says she wants to do “strong” characters.
“I’d love to play a cop. I want to be a political leader in a film, or do action films. I don’t want to repeat the roles I’ve done already,” she signs off.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
