Step Up 3’s loss is Bollywood’s gain

Lauren Gottlieb shot to fame when she won the US dance show So You Think You Can Dance and choreographed Tom Cruise for MTV Awards. But the US-based dancer and actor says that Bollywood dance is what she enjoys the most.
“And I hope I will get to dance with Hrithik Roshan someday. I believe he is one of the best dancers in Bollywood,” says Lauren, who has been riding high since the release of her first Bollywood film Anybody Can Dance. Lauren recalls when she couldn’t make it in the Step Up 3 film auditions. “I was heartbroken for not being able to be a part of the film, but at that time I hadn’t imagined that an Indian version of the film would have me as one of its leading actors. When Remo, who had seen me dancing, called and said that I will be the hero of his film I was thrilled,” says Lauren.
Taking up the project was a big risk for the dancer who wasn’t very familiar with Indian culture and Bollywood. “I didn’t know the country, language and what exactly was expected from me. But I believe when you take risks, great things happen,” says Lauren, adding that her first three months in India were very hectic because of dance and language training sessions.
“Prabhu Deva is the best dance teacher in the world. However, it was not just all about sweating it out on the dance floor. We had our own share of fun as well. We were a bunch of dance lovers and used to crash at Remo’s place in Mumbai to party and dance all night,” laughs Lauren.
She hasn’t seen many Bollywood films but Bodyguard and The Dirty Picture are two of her most favourite movies. And now when her film is out Lauren is happy with the response of the film. “I knew the audience will like the film even when we were working on it,” she says.
Lauren is all set to make it big in the industry. She says that she is interested in action films. “I am waiting for something big to come my way. I know it’s a big risk and I am willing to take the challenge. After all, this is what dancers do,” wraps up Lauren.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
