A starry night

The heady fragrance of jasmine flowers and the commotion around the 31, Aurgangzeb Road bungalow was hard to miss on Thursday night when the who’s who of Indian politics and film industry walked the green carpet to bless Bollywood’s newly-wedded couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor at their wedding reception or Dawat-e-Walima hosted by Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore, Begum of Pataudi.

Curious onlookers, crazy fans and crazier mediawallas all wanted to catch a glimpse of the power couple.
The couple arrived at the venue late in the night in a white Merc. While Kareena wore a pink gharara by Manish Malhotra, Saif donned a black sherwani by Raghavendra Rathore.
Sharmila, dressed in an elegant silk sari in gold with antique jewelled neckpiece, spoke to the media and said, “I would like you all to bless the couple and share our happiness. There was no reception in Mumbai, just the marriage. We danced and had a lot of fun. There is no celebration in Pataudi, not now at least. We may have something later. Abhi sab thak gaye hain. Abhi daal-chawal ka time aa gaya hai.”
Director Madhur Bhandarkar, who was present with his wife, also wished the couple and said, “I am very glad that Kareena and Saif are married. I wish the couple all the best.” Designer Manish Malthotra, who looked dapper in a royal blue sherwani, also congratulated the couple and said, “Kareena is like my sister and I am very happy for her.”
The other top-notch political guests who came to congratulate the couple included Rahul Gandhi, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur, Kamal Nath, Farooq Abdullah, Arun Jaitley, Sitaram Yechury, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Shashi Tharoor with wife Sunanda, Amar Singh and Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda among others.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
