Stage visual drama

Proud homeowners believe in making their house look good not just for a day but all year around. And when it comes to hosting a get-together, they want nothing less then perfection in home décor. So, if you plan to host friends over an intimate setting, make sure to apply some brilliant tips on how to light up your home. Whether inside or outside, lights are key in setting up the mood and making a house look like a beautiful home. Here are some ‘light’ tips.

Layer the light:
You wouldn’t want a bright overhead light shining down on an intimate dinner party or a single lamp lighting a space where you’re trying to do a project. The main goal of lighting design is to introduce varying degrees of light into a room, which are called layers.

Create more interest:
If you only have direct light sources, it will make a space feel dark and gloomy. And if you light the room evenly with no contrast, the room will appear flat and uninviting. Lighting is all about creating interest and visual drama, and layers of light are parts of the whole look that create the ultimate ambiance.

Use of alternate sources:
Some occasions call for bright light, but a party isn’t one of them. Your guests will feel relaxed and comfortable if the lights are a bit dimmer than usual. Consider keeping overhead lights turned off, relying instead on lamps, sconces and other light sources. This creates an intimate atmosphere, encouraging everyone to open up and socialise. Hang ornaments from ceiling fixtures so they catch the light.

Add extra elements:
Your home is already full of light fixtures — pendants, sconces, lamps and chandeliers. Dress them up for the party. Hang ornaments from ceiling fixtures so they catch the light. Wind greenery and berry branches around a pendant light’s cord or around the branches of a chandelier.

Personalise the space:
Candles add personal touch to the evening. The natural radiance coming from candles sets up the mood as soon as one enters the party. Besides adding light and sparkle, candles come in beautiful variants of perfumes. This also adds up and creates mood lighting. Candles adds a special spark to every décor.

Float some candles:
Using floating candles gives a special look. They are popular in adding to the look and feel of the ambience. Floating candles are available in numerous colours and shapes. Floated in a small glass or a large pool, they can be used to give a festive, fun or cosy feel. They are safe to use provided dry materials are kept well away.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
