Spreading beauty around

We have all heard that to be successful in any field you need to look the part. Clare Aggarwal is a beautician and she looks the part. In other words half Punjabi, half Irish Clare is a stunner. By sheer desire to emulate her, you would like to hire her. Yes, she is a mobile beautician and runs a beauty business. She or a member of her team will travel to any location within Central London to turn your home into a mini spa.
Give them five minutes in your bedroom, and they will transform it into a Zen den with soft scented candles, fluffy towels and relaxing music. Give you a facial, manicure or pedicure, ease away stress and make your self-esteem soar in seconds.
How did she think of starting this business? She had a strong desire to start her own business because her gut told her that she would make a success out of it. “I have always wanted to do my own thing, and work for myself,” she says.
She gained first-hand experience in beauty treatments at the Elemis spa in Mayfair. Realising her niche, she went straight for it. Plunged straight in with determination.
Clare personally prefers organic and natural products and swears by Elemental Herbology and Aveda.
“A typical day for me is busy busy busy. I always go to bed late, so I never wake up before 8 am. I then start the day with a fruit juice or smoothie, and have breakfast on the go. Although I have a very hectic lifestyle I always try to eat 5 meals a day, I think it is important to look as good inside, as you do outside. And beauty does come from within,” she says.
What is the philosophy which drives her? “I work most days, and believe hard work pays off.” Clare spends no money on PR and advertising. All her business comes through word of mouth referrals. Does she ever relax? Unwind? Yes. She has a family home in Goa where she goes for me-time.
Victoria Beckham and Frieda Pinto are her style icons. “I had the pleasure of meeting Frieda, and I was amazed by her beauty, style and humility. She was so humble. She is the perfect mix of beautiful and sexy.”
Her client list reads like a Who’s who of the entertainment world. International musicians, actresses and producers. She is tight-lipped with names. But she is privy to their personal lives and she does know a lot about them. She needs to visit them at their homes remember. Her typical customer is a busy mum who likes to relax and pamper herself.
After all this success, what is her dream? “To become a mum,” she says. Simple. Basic.
As Clare whizzes around town transforming women into modern day Aphrodites she packs in 14-hour-work days seven days a week. In her words — “I can rest when I am older.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
