Spooky fun on campus

After a positive and happy interaction (with no ragging) with seniors, the fuchchas in Delhi University are all geared up for their freshers’ parties. And this time funky themes and interesting features seem to be the flavour of the season.
Miranda House’s Economics department has planned a theme party based on “Halloween”, to give students a, well, spooky shock. Karmini Sharma, a third year student, Economics (Hons), shares, “It was fun to see freshers dressed as draculas, skeletons, pumpkins, witches and vampires.” And Hindu College went a step forward. Reveals Arjun, a first year student, Economics, says, “We had a theme called ‘Cross Dress Up’, where girls had to dress like boys and boys like girls. It was hilarious to see boys in feminine dresses. I wore an evening dress, borrowed from my sister and many of my batchmates wore short skirts and shorts.”
Popular for its rocking freshers’ party, St Stephen’s College too celebrated it with gusto. Preeti Gulati, a third year student, History (hons), reveals, “Our theme was ‘Time Travels from Past’, so we had to dress like a historical character. Students were dressed as Benjamin Franklin and Marilyn Monroe. We also had some fun interactions where the past meets the present, so it was great to see Benjamin and Mayawati discussing science and politics.”
While Stephen’s Eco department had ‘Music Icon’ as its theme, freshers came dressed as Michael Jackson, Sunidhi Chauhan, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. And the Maths and B.Sc department is soon to have a bash based on interesting themes like ‘Pyjama Party’ and ‘Ugly Princess and Wild Cowboys’.
Kamla Nehru College is pretty excited about the ‘Retro 70s’ theme and students have already decided on their look. “I’m planning to flaunt in a nice orange sari like Mumtaz with a fringe and big bun, while my friends are going for Hema Malini and Sridevi’s look.” And to create a friendly atmosphere for their juniors, many are also planning to include a couple, paper and lap dance. While Lady Shri Ram College and Sri Venkateswara College, are yet to decide their themes, Kirori Mal College and Maharaja Agarsen are keeping it simple. They are planning to welcome new students with a grand DJ session, followed by a best-dressed freshers competition.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
