Spirituality meets style

Simple and classy — that was the look 23-year-old interior designer Shilpa Khanna wanted for her Vasant Vihar home.

An elegant apartment in South Delhi, the home boasts of a contemporary setting with a spiritual feel. A big picture of Lord Balaji welcomes you as you enter the house. Shilpa says that this was the best place for this photograph, as Lord Balaji symbolises peace and luxury. A straight line bench with some planters adorn that space as well.
However, it’s the living area that defines the décor of the house completely. An uncluttered space with contemporary and straight line furniture with a little neo-classical look is the united décor theme of the entire house, while subdued gold and silver upholstery add to the look.
Shilpa says that the upholstery is a recent change that has been done. “Earlier the upholstery was very light in colour. With metallic shades we have tried to add a little zing and brightness,” she says.
Like the entrance, the living room too has many pictures of gods, especially of Krishna Leela. Shilpa says that her parents are firm believers and thus instead of paintings, they thought of adorning the walls with pictures of gods. “And Krishna Leela is interesting as well. One would not really miss paintings in the décor if the right pictures from the colourful life of Krishna are chosen,” she says, pointing towards one of the focal walls that had Krishna painting from his Raas-Leela phase. “Raas-Leela picture in the living area is also a sign of love and prosperity,” she says and adds that she has left most of the tables in the room vacant for a clutter-free look.
A wisely separated dining area is another interesting feature of the living area. It leads the way to the kitchen, making it more convenient to serve the guests — clearly, a sign of functional architecture.
However, Shilpa’s favourite area in the house is the terrace garden. “Having greenery around you is great,” she says.
And another area that she loves is her bedroom — a pink themed room — that’s youthful and lively. “It has been designed keeping in mind that it’s a girl’s room. The major focus is on the pink bed, the carved sun mirror and the curtains. The design element in my room is the mirror. The cupboard with white ceramic glass and framework of walnut finish also add to the look,” she says.
Another attractive feature in the house that adds to the look is the clove lighting, indoor plants and a lot of vases at the corners.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
