Spirited desserts
Be innovative this festive season and serve something different at your house party. Chocolate Martini, Stoli Vanil Vodka, Butterscotch schnapps, White Crème de Cacao. How does that sound for a change? Dessert cocktails are a perfect way to round off a great dinner. And trust me, guests will never miss a dessert, if you serve these with care. Liqueurs, that I spoke about, in my last column, too are delicious and have their own place, but these are a notch above, I have to confess. There is so much you can do with dessert cocktails.
I once sampled a Blackforest Gateau Martini. I can never get it out of my mind. It was decadent. Who needed a dessert with this one around? Vodka, cacao dark, cacao white, creme de cassis and fresh berries, shaken with a cream float and finished with coco powder. Yummy! I was like a child with a new toy.
To my utter delight, I recently discovered dessert cocktails at a restaurant in Mumbai. Some of these drinks replicate the flavours of our favourite desserts and many are thick, creamy cocktails that are real indulgence. The all time favourite dessert Death by Chocolate is served in the form of a cocktail too.
Arja Shridhar, owner, Pizza Metro Pizza, told me “We have tried to come up with an exciting combination of dessert cocktails so as to be able to serve our cocktails and desserts in a fascinating manner with an interesting twist to it. We offer a variety of dessert cocktails apart from Death by Chocolate. The dessert cocktails are made using spirits like Kahlua/Baileys/Brandy Flambe.”
My friend does not have a fetish for desserts like me; yet, she must have her creme bruée martini. She got me to taste it once and now I know why she does not miss desserts! Wonder what a Tiramisu Martini would be like? It is always a good option to serve dessert cocktails at a party. That way there is something for all: for dessert lovers, as well as those who enjoy their drinks.
With infused liquors, creamy rich flavours, and twists on classic favourites, dessert goes from the plate to the shaker. So, clearly pleasure for the palate need not always be on the plate. It can be from your glass too!
