Sound alert in DU
Recently, Kamala Nehru College was evacuated in a jiffy due to a bomb scare. According to reports, a few girls raised an alarm on finding a suspicious looking unidentified bag in their campus and police rushed to the rescue. Though it turned out to be a hoax, the entire incident raised an important question — is the security arrangement at colleges enough to combat terror attacks? We find out how secure do students feel on campus.
Vibhuti Varma, a second year student at Kamala Nehru College, says, “I was at the college when the hoax bomb incident happened. It was actually a girl from some other college who had left her bag, which caused all the panic. It was just one week after the HC bomb blast and everyone was alert. The bomb squad was called immediately. I think students are quite aware now and even if there isn’t enough security, they raise alarm on noticing anything suspicious. The reaction is very prompt and that’s better than laid back security personnel.”
However, Ipsita, a final year student from IP College, feels that there should be more security in colleges. She says, “In our college the guards check the identity cards till 10 am and after that any girl can enter. There are no other security checks and nobody checks bags. There should be a metal detector on campus to have a fool-proof protection.”
In co-ed colleges too, it’s easy to sneak inside without getting noticed. Bhaskar Pandit, a DU student mentions, “In colleges there are police vans outside the campus, and a few cops who patrol from time to time. Colleges need more security to prevent any terror attack.”
