Songs from the soul
Shobin Kannangattu’s life was changed by a freak bike accident 11 years ago. But adversity turned to creativity and he poured his heart out in words. That fateful day Shobin, a college student, enthusiastic and full of dreams who loved to write songs, got on his bike like every other day, but met with an accident that he didn’t bother about too much at first.
A few days later he began to have problems reading, making out forms, identifying people he knew well. His central vision was impaired. His world began crumbling down. He stopped going to college and stayed away from everything for two years.
In 2005, he regained some of his mental strength and joined college. In April that year, he wrote a song and recited it to his neighbour and musician Arjunan Master. Arjunan was so happy with the words he set it to music. Shobin had turned a lyricist.
“But the first song I wrote was for Unni Menon. Once when he came to perform at the Puthur Temple in Palakkad, he asked me to replace the lyrics of his song Oru Chembaneer, with words about the Goddess worshipped there. He sang it there and introduced me to the audience. When he brought out an album Badra Priya, he asked me to write one song.” Thus began Shobin’s journey as a lyricist.
He has penned 17 songs so far, his latest being Doore... for Sidhartha Siva’s award-winning film 101 Chodyangal. Accolades poured in aplenty and with it came more opportunities.
