Social issues rock fest
Excitement, energy and enthusiasm were the highlights when Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS) celebrated its College Techno Management Cultural Fest, “Verve 2k11” recently. The two-day fun-filled event brought together creativity, intellect and youthful exuberance of students. Living up to its title, the event covered a wide range of activities, which brought together a lot of dynamism and a fresher perspective.
The festival marked the participation of teams from 76 city colleges including Delhi School of Economics, Hansraj College, Sri Venkateshwara, Ramjas, Khalsa College, Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, JK Business School in various competitions such as smart quiz, sudoku, web designing, Bheja Fry (cerebral grilling), English and Hindi debates, Ad Mad Show, RJ Hunt, laughter challenge, culinary show, costume jewellery design, rangoli, and much more.
Shweta Dangi, a second year PGDM student and fashion show coordinator, talked about the Roman theme for the fashion show. “Young models walked down the ramp flaunting western dresses and casual wear in interesting colours that included lots of cream, gold, white, bronze, brown and maroon. Some of them also displayed a fun look. While boys were dressed as warriors and priests, girls sashayed down flaunting gorgeous Roman styles. It was worth a watch,” she added.
The opening events included a film screening which remained committed to serious social issues. Ruchi Garg, coordinator of the documentary film competition “Film Jagaat”, revealed, “It was good to see student-directed films based on social concerns. We also had a street show from our theatre group ‘Rangeele’, which gave multiple performances addressing serious issues like female foeticide, dowry and corruption,” she added.
The biggest highlight of the festival remained the solo dance competition that pulled the maximum crowd.
The theme was Bollywood freestyle and participants showed some amazing jhatkas on popular desi tracks. “It was a great show and extremely enjoyable. From Sheila Ki Jawani to Anjaana Anjaani, all the peppy numbers added liveliness to the performance,” she added.
The festivities concluded with a performance by the rock band Dhun. The crowd swayed to foot-tapping numbers by Bollywood singer Labh Janjua. Known for his hit bhangra and hip-hop songs, Janjua mesmerised students present for the jam session.
