A mushy, romantic dinner can be the apt set-up to woo your valentine, but if you thought a box of chocolate would be an add-on then you might be wrong. Young lovers are not thinking beyond conventional gifting items. They are more drawn towards the gadgets.

And this tech-freak generation that has given the tech companies a lead to introduce offers on their products around the Valentine’s Day.
Apple is running a Valentine’s Day promotion on its online store, drawing attention to its free engraving offer and signature gift-wrapping service. The campaign features the iPad and iPad mini as ideal gifts for the day, with the iPod touch and iPod nano also being highlighted.
Moser Baer too has introduced a Valentine range of pen drives that includes heart-shaped pendant, macho key chain, guitar-shaped keychain and bracelet-shaped pen drive.
Youngsters, who are making most of these offers, say they are spoilt for choice.
Ravinder Yadav, a student of Mass Communication, was looking for a hi-tech phone for her girlfriend when he discovered that there are multiple offers on gadgets around Valentine’s Day. “I have heard of discounts on electronics around Diwali but I was pleasantly surprised when I found many offers on gadgets on the online stores. I’m settling down for a colourful Nokia Lumia that I’m sure my girl will like,” he says and adds that he has got a good offer on one of the online stores.
Some are of the opinion that a make-up kit or a chocolate box doesn’t excite their girlfriends as much as a gadget would. Sumit Verma, a student of medicine, says that last year when he bought his girlfriend a set of luxury perfumes, she wasn’t very happy to see that. But when Sumit got her a hard-disk drive on her birthday, she was impressed with the choice.
“We all are tech-savvy. She had a lot of data on her laptop that she wanted to transfer to another device. The hard disk helped her do just that,” says Sumit, who is now planning to gift the new pink-coloured Motorola Droid that has just been launched.
There is a definite surge in the demand for cute little technology products to be given as gifts during festive occasions, think experts.
“These days, people are more cautious about two things while gifting — besides the look and feel of the gift, it should have immediate utility and should have sufficient shelf life too. Marketers are coming up with innovative ideas that add immensely to the visual appeal. Combined with a heady mix of utility, looks and quality, tech products have become one of the most coveted give-aways these days,” says Deepak Shetty, senior vice president-domestic sales and marketing, Moser Baer India Ltd.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
