Slopes of snowy delight
What if you find a place that looks like it is a set from Hindi romantic movies, where pristine snow clad mountains and clear blue skies meet at the horizon. Well, Narkanda in Himachal Pradesh is one such destination that can overwhelm you with its natural beauty.
Situated at an attitude of 2708 metres on the Hindustan Tibet road (NH 22) and about 65 kms from Shimla and 380 kms from Delhi, Narkanda offers a spectacular view of snow ranges. One of the most amazing things during my trip was the road-trip to Narkanda from Shimla. The 65 kms long drive is witness to some truly breath-taking and scintillating views of the beautiful mountains.
This is an ideal retreat for tourists who seek seclusion in mountains. It commands an unique view of the eternal snow line, the inviting apple orchards and dense forests. Narkanda is a gateway to apple country of Himachal Pradesh.
Narkanda is famous for skiing and winter sports. Winters are the best time to visit this place, as the ski season starts here around this time of the year. Ski camps are organised by various experienced instructors, even for beginners.
The Narkanda ski slopes are 1.5 kms away from the town. During these days the slopes come alive with skiers. Skiing at Narkanda was started in 1980 and since then HPTDC is conducting skiing courses every year.
At 3,300 metres above sea level stands the majestic Hatu peak. It is around eight km away from Narkanda and the road heading to the peak is surrounded by pine and spruce trees. Sheltered in the shadow of a high mountain, the Hatu derives its name from the highest peak of the area.
The Hatu peak is located among quiet surroundings and it is an ideal location for leisure and sightseeing. It is also an excellent stopover for those moving along the Hindustan Tibet highway.
The peak offers spectacular view of the entire Himalaya range, snow-clad mountains, dense forests, green fields and apple orchards.
Hiking is recommended to reach the peak. On top of the hill is the ancient Hatu Mata temple, which is a religious shrine in this small town.
One of the popular tourist destinations around the town is Kacheri (1,810 mtrs above sea level). It is located 500m from Oddi and seven kms from Narkanda on NH-22 and the place is famous for the ancient Mahamaya Temple.
The Jallori pass (3,550 mtrs above sea level) is 90 kms from Narkanda, passing through the Sutlej Valley. While crossing the beautiful Luhri, Ani, Khanag through one of the best scenery in the Kullu Valley takes you to Jallori Pass.
With serene views of the peaks, valleys and orchards on permanent display, this town is an ideal mix of countryside comforts and adventures.
