Simple yet haunting
Freearcade.com releases three new flash games every week day, but it involves mixed fare, and some of the story lines are embarrassingly inane. Skeptically, I read through each of the flash games descriptors, and after some dithering, finally decided to give Gravity 2 a whirl. But as is the case with most such free games, there are plenty of ad banners, threatening to be a formidable distraction when the game begins.
The play area turned deep black. The sky was all starry. A hauntingly simple music track repeats in waves through game play. There is a terse one-line tutorial before each level, and I triumphantly made it up to Level 11, till I came up against the proverbial wall. Not a clue how to get through this bind. And with no one to ask, haunting gives way to hopelessness! Gravity 2 requires you to target asteroids into a blazing sun. Click and drag a direction line for the asteroid. The force of your action decides the velocity of movement. It’s all very elegant, and presented in a surprisingly disarming manner. The sophistication packed into targeting and movement actions is amazing.
In a sudden post-dinner breakthrough, I suddenly blazed through till Level 14. With some patience and many failed attempts at rudimentary trajectory and relative speed calculations, you learn to slingshot around some planets, and use the momentum from being repelled by others. Beware the unforgiving milky way!
