Shooting star’s glam outing

Dressed in a black kurta and churidar along with a brown half-jacket, Olympic silver medallist shooter Vijay Kumar looked strikingly suave at the launch of a new Indian men’s wear line by a city based designer.

When we caught up with him and asked him about his fashion debut, he promptly answered, “Actually, this was one of the first events I was invited to after my return from the London Olympics and I was relatively free, so I thought I will come over.”
Talking about his performance in the Olympics, he said, “It was my first Olympics and when I was performing, the only thing I had in mind was that it is my first and last chance. I had to make it. My coach, Pavel Smirnov was also beside me throughout and told me to think that it is just another competition.”
Recollecting the reception he received on coming back from London, Kumar adds, “It was overwhelming to find so many Indian fans waiting for me at the airport. It was like a dream come true.”
Serving the Indian army, Vijay Kumar was promoted to the rank of Subedar Major post his victory. He says, “It is a great feeling to serve the Indian army.”
At the moment, he is preparing for the upcoming ISSF World Cup in Bangkok starting on October 22.
“As of now, I haven’t received any movie or endorsement offers. But I don’t mind taking them up. However, not at the cost of my shooting sessions,” he says.
Vijay also tells us that he is an avid Bollywood fan. So when we ask him, if given a chance to act with any of the current crop of actresses, whom would he prefer as a co-star, he says, “I like all of them and wouldn’t mind acting with any of them.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
