Shawl turns canvas for Husain’s horse
It was her love for colours that attracted entrepreneur Jyotika Jhalani into the world of art that later shaped up into her company Janavi, which is now a fashion brand known for its shawls. To honour late artist M.F. Husain, Jyotika recently created a special cashmere shawl with Husain’s iconic painting ‘Horse sense’ embroidered on it. She plans to gift this shawl to Husain’s daughter Aquila in the memory of her father.
Talking about her love for art Jyotika says, “As a child, I was attracted to colours, so I used paint and wanted to do something in the field of art. I was working with the World Bank for 10 years and finally I decided to quit and pursue my true calling. I started my company Janavi, and since I’m a Kashmiri, I decided to create colourful shawls under this label.”
About her association with Husain’s art Jyotika mentions that she was fascinated by the artist because he profusely used colours in his works. She says, “I met Husain in London a few years back and it was a great experience. My husband and his daughter went to the same school, so we had a close association with his family. To honour his works, I specially chose his artwork ‘Horse sense’ since it is one of my favourite. The shawl has ari (fine thread) work all over, and I have given a satin border to it which gives the look of a framed painting.”
