FIFA anthems Waka Waka sung by the hip shaking wonder Shakira and Waving Flag by K’naan have emerged as the hottest caller tunes and ringtones among youngsters.
Gunjan Dua, a media professional and a football fanatic, who has set Waka Waka as her ringtone, says, “I love the beats and Shakira’s moves. I feel like dancing the same way whenever my mobile buzzes to this track. Besides, giving the soccer feel, the African lyrics of the song are perky and fun.”
According to Devandre Kumar, customer care executive, Vodafone, “For the past four weeks, both the tracks are on our top caller tune hitlist. But now, as soccer is nearing the finale, Waving flag has become the hottest track.”
Agrees Sumit Singh, senior manager, CPA Global, who has Waving flag as his caller tune. He says, “The track makes me feel part of the event even from a few thousand miles away. Artiste K’naan sings it from his heart and this can be felt every time you listen to it. Apart from being extremely catchy, both the tracks embrace the spirit of the game.”
Waka Waka has maximum hits on Youtube and Waving Flag has hit the charts as the most popular downloaded international song in India.
And besides the new tracks, many are also going in for the original version of Waving Flag and some are setting it as their caller tune.
Informs Smitashish Sengupta, a college student, “I like the original version of Waving Flag better, as it was sung by various Canadian artistes for the Haiti earthquake in January 2010. Nobody was aware about the track then, but making it the promotional song for FIFA has increased its popularity again. So, just to introduce the original track to my friends, I set it as my caller tune. I find it both soothing and inspirational.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
