Shades of nature

Celebrating the joy of nature, Freesia, an organisation for creative studies and development, recently hosted an exhibition of art and photography by children with special needs at the Lodi — Garden Restaurant in the city.
Roma Sahni, Freesia founder secretary, children suffering from autism and Down’s syndrome are enrolled in her institute, says, “It was great to see the overwhelming response of the exhibition. The overjoyed expression on the kids’ face gave me immense satisfaction.”
From beautiful flowers paintings to photographs of natural surroundings, 11 participants from Freesia presented their works on the theme “nature”.
Kanchan Khandelwal, mother one of the participant, Abhinav Khandelwal, who exhibited his photographs shared, “I never thought Abhinav can be such a good photographer. He was being trained in this subject for the past four months at Freesia school. It’s a proud moment to see your child’s work exhibited on such a large platform. Now, whenever we have some functions or birthday parties at home, he gladly clicks pictures.”
Another participant, a 28-year-old Ruhi Divis, who showcased her paintings, wants to be a dancer. “I initially enrolled her into a mainstream school, but she didn’t like the concept of structural schooling. After joining Freesia, she became more confident and extrovert and is now more focused about her life. She wants to be a dancer and it makes me quite happy and content to see my daughter grow and realise her passion.”
Besides Freesia’s other major events including Dance and Couture show, Sports Meet and Kids Carnival, this is the first annual fundraising exhibition of art and photography organised for the special children. Roma wants to now expand her projects for further development of these kids. “Creative sector should be made part of the education system for these kids. I need the support of corporates and government to help me establish an institute with various vocational courses like pottery, computer courses. The kids will be trained according to their interest for a sustainable future,” she sums up.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
