Security beefed up for Diwali shopping

Security arrangements at the capital’s popular and bustling markets and malls have been beefed up in the wake of the ongoing festive season. Cops have been keeping a watchful eye to avoid any mishap. While the number of police personnel deployed across the city has gone up, fire fighters have taken positions outside crowded malls and markets to ensure an incident-free festive period.
Rajan Bhagat, the Delhi Police spokesperson said that special arrangements have been made for security requirements and shoppers can walk freely.
“But the public too should be vigilant and if any suspicious object, person or vehicle is noticed, information should be passed on immediately to the nearest police station, or they can call up our toll free number 1090,” he added.
Constable Satish Kumar said that they have given trainees the task to make rounds and have told parking attendants to not allow owners car parking if they find anything “suspicious”. He says, “People have been co-operative so far. Police personnel are vigilantly manning markets and we will ensure that nobody is seen snooping around.”
Shoppers in turn are happy with the arrangements and say that one can’t not go out when the festival season is on and increased security is always good. Says Sarita Kaushik, a DU student, “There’s strict checking at the entrance of Greater Kailash M-Block main market. Cops are actively checking every car that is entering the market. Also, there was a blast in GK last year, so it is great that cops are leaving nothing to chance.”
But there are a few who believe that a lot needs to be done. “I went to Rajouri Garden market and could not see any barricades. The malls are following their regular checks, but the main market is still vulnerable,” says Shailaj Verma, a BPO executive.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
