In search of the truth
World-renowned mentalist Gerard Senehi was just a teenager when he had his first psychic experience. But if you ask him what exactly is a mentalist, he won’t give you a direct answer. “It’s a fun opportunity to prevent people from too easily categorising what I do,” he admits candidly.
Gerard recently came to India along with Andrew Cohen, his spiritual teacher of 25 years, to enlighten people about the powers of the mind and the cosmic and cultural evolution. “Because the career as a mentalist is not narrowly defined, there are a lot of different directions one can take it in. One famous mentalist has consulted governments, others offer personal advice to individuals — I stay away from any of that. My interest as a mentalist is to inspire curiosity about bigger ways of looking at the very lives we have, beyond the static identities that culture has taught us.”
One of the most common myths about mentalists is the one that equates them with magicians. Gerard says, “A magician tends to use more slight of hand and props to create illusions. A mentalist, generally, doesn’t use props and tends to use more mental abilities such as psychological manipulation, feats of memory, ability to hypnotise and in some cases psychic abilities.”
