The onset of summer translates into outdoor activities, picnics, swimming, etc. We all know the harsh effects of the scorching heat but what it is that damages the skin is very pertinent to understand. UVA rays are primarily responsible for tanning, pigmentation and photo ageing, while UVB rays can lead to sun burns. Dr Sangeeta Amladi, head, medical services, Kaya Skin Clinic, shares how increased production of natural oils in the summer can lead to breakout of acne. It is also estimated that 90 percent of wrinkles are caused due to sun exposure. Heat, humidity and harsh sunlight extract a heavy price from the skin.

Summer scorchers
While cleansing, toning and moisturising are essential to maintaining the perfect health of your skin, looking for the right products becomes a big challenge. The scorching heat can steal away your natural glow making your skin look dull. What could be a better supplement than products with multi-vitamin complex that can revive your lifeless skin. The perfect combination of Vitamin B3, B5, C and E present in your daily skincare products helps in enhancing your dull, tired skin and also washes away impurities. Vitamin B3 and B5 can help increase the skin’s natural barrier against pollutants & other irritants. Vitamin B3 has also shown to be useful for encouraging the production of natural emollients that can help the skin remain hydrated. It may also be a useful addition to your anti-aging skin care regimen.
Skin-tillating
Vitamin E and C are antioxidants that protect and repair your skin. Antioxidants are agents that neutralise oxidants effect of free radicals which are molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, etc. Stress, pollution and busy lifestyle create a deficiency/ imbalance in our system, therefore it’s important to have these in your diet and additionally in your products to ensure supple skin. Studies show that the long term benefit of Vitamin E is also the reduction in sun burn caused due to UVB rays but that doesn’t mean one can be exposed to the sun. These will just help you in making your skin stay healthier by ensuring you get a dose of your antioxidants.

Ray ban
Another important skincare regimen is to apply sunscreen effectively to protect your skin while stepping out in the sun. As mentioned earlier, UV rays can be extremely damaging in this weather. Therefore, a sunscreen with specific SPF (Sun Protection Factor) should be used suiting to you skin type. Generally for everyday use an SPF of 15/30 is good enough to protect the skin.
More than SPF 30 creams are greasy and hence not recommended during summers. If you have an outdoor job that compels you to stay out most of the day, re-apply the sunscreen every two to three hours. Enjoy summers and indulge in outdoor activities but make these an everyday part of your skincare to make the most of the season.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
