The Scene-Stealers
As Amrish Puri releases Kajol’s hand from his tight grip, she runs to hold SRK’s outstretched hands from a running train — this climax of DDLJ remains deeply etched in minds of viewers.
The iconic scene has now been recreated in the upcoming movie, Chennai Express, starring SRK and Deepika Padukone. Whether it will strike the nostalgic chord remains to be seen. We talk to celebs and ask them about that one brilliant scene from a Bollywood film which they would love to see recreated with the current crop of actors.
“In the movie Amar Akbar Anthony, Amitabh Bachchan gets beaten up by Vinod Khanna and can’t defend himself as he is drunk. He gets back home, stands in front of the mirror and delivers a comic monologue that is outstanding. Although difficult to recreate, I would love to see that scene unfold again. The only actor who would be able to pull it off among the current stars is Aamir Khan,” says actor and director, Parvin Dabas. The scene has down in Bollywood history as one of the best in the comic realm. From Amitabh’s gestures, mannerisms to his dialogue delivery, everything is just perfect.
This is not the only scene picturised on Amitabh Bachchan that gets a thumbs up from the industry. “The scene from Deewar, where Amitabhji and Shashi Kapoor stand below an overbridge, engage in a verbal duel and Shashi Kapoor wins by saying, ‘Mere paas maa hai’ has become synonymous with cinema of 70s. It is impossible to create the same impact. But still it gets my vote for an iconic scene,” says actor Rohit Roy. He suggests Ajay Devgn in Amitabh’s shoes and Ranbir Kapoor in Shashi Kapoor’s role might strike some semblance to the original.
In the 80s, Mr. India managed to entertain young and old equally. There is already a sequel planned in the near future. The movie has many interesting moments. “I love the scene immediately post Hawa-Hawai dance, where Sridevi is caught and Anil Kapoor lands up as invisible Mr India to rescue her. The energy and expressions of Sridevi is superb. Anushka Sharma would be able to recreate the magic, if given a chance,” says director Madhureeta Anand.
Among Gulzar’s best creations was the beautiful tale of relationships, Ijaazat starring Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha and Anuradha Patel. The movie broke staid norms and handled emotions in a mature manner. “The movie is a brilliant piece of work. It is subtle yet powerful. I know not many would remember it scene by scene. However, there is a scene where, Naseeruddin Shah rebukes Anuradha Patel for creating havoc in his married life and this is followed by the beautiful song, Mera kuchh aaamaan tumhare paas pada hai. I just can’t get enough of this film,” says adman Prahlad Kakkar.
