Sanctuary for soul
One thing that majority of us look forward to at the end of the day is to retire to a sanctuary called home. This is simply because home is a shelter insulated from the cut-throat world outside, the toxicity and negative energies, the competition and the petty rivalries. Retreating to home literally acts like a soothing balm for our soul. It helps us detach, reflect, introspect and brace ourselves for another day.
The sheer change in the scene helps to take one’s mind off the day’s preoccupations (out of sight is out of mind remember!). So, in a manner of speaking, as you close one window, cast off the attendant baggage and open another and tune into different vibrations, the mind too changes mode.
It is only to be expected that at the end of the day your energies have been drained physically, mentally and to an extent emotionally as well. Getting away from it all and turning the focus on things that give you joy and fill your heart with love, de-stresses one totally. Enjoying unstructured time in your sanctuary is not only energising but also enhances productivity, creativity, clarity of thinking and even boosts your immune system.
Even if one is dealing with intractable problems at home or work, tackling them after taking a “sanctuary” break can enable one to come up with fresh insights, perspectives and newfound enthusiasm. Where as, looking and dwelling on the same unpleasant things can be mind numbing and lead to burn out.
Creating a sanctuary within a sanctuary — your own favourite spot in the home — could be a wise and practical thing to do. If it’s not your comfortable living room couch, you could retire to your prayer alcove and find the energies flowing in from a higher power to you.
Alternatively, a place where you check personal mails or Skype chat at night with loved ones, or a balcony with your favourite plants and a cosy swing from where you can watch the world go by, or music corner where you could chill, or even a well stocked library can rejuvenate and lift your spirits.
Look for places in the outdoors too. A well laid out garden or park, the very sight of the greenery and the open expanse can be restorative.
Choose your sanctuary based on what appeals to you. It could even be your kitchen, yoga studio or jogging track! Give your spirit a sanctuary to rest and rejuvenate.
